Pamelor Dosage

The recommended starting Pamelor dose for treating depression is 25 mg three or four times a day. Your healthcare provider may increase your Pamelor dosage if you tolerate the medication well. If you take more than 100 mg of Pamelor per day, your healthcare provider should monitor the level of the medication in your blood. As it can take several weeks to feel the full effects of the medication, try to give Pamelor a chance before becoming discouraged.

An Overview of Pamelor Dosage
The dose of Pamelor (nortriptyline hydrochloride) your healthcare provider prescribes will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may currently be taking.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Pamelor Dosing for Depression
For depression treatment, the recommended Pamelor dose is Pamelor 25 mg three or four times per day. You healthcare provider should start you at a lower dose and slowly increase your dose if you tolerate Pamelor well. Also, your healthcare provider may decide to have you take your Pamelor dose once a day (instead of splitting it into three or four smaller doses). If you take more than Pamelor 100 mg per day, your healthcare provider should monitor the level of Pamelor in your blood.

Although Pamelor is not approved for use in teens, the manufacturer gives recommendations for Pamelor dosing in teens. For teenage depression or depression in the elderly, lower doses are recommended. The recommended dose for teens or elderly people is Pamelor 30 mg to 50 mg total per day (taken all at once or split into smaller doses).

General Pamelor Dosage Information
Some considerations for people taking Pamelor include:

  • Pamelor should be taken at the same times each day.

  • If you do not take your Pamelor as scheduled, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if you usually take your dose at night, you may not want to make up the missed dose, due to the risk of drowsiness if Pamelor is taken during the day. Also, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of Pamelor.

  • Your Pamelor dosage can be taken with or without food. If Pamelor upsets your stomach, try taking it with food.

  • If you are experiencing bothersome Pamelor side effects, such as drowsiness or dizziness, ask your healthcare provider about taking your Pamelor dose at bedtime (instead of during the day). This may help decrease drowsiness or dizziness.

  • It often takes several weeks to see the full antidepressant effect of Pamelor. Try to give Pamelor a chance to work before becoming discouraged.

  • For Pamelor to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. Pamelor will not work if you take it in a way other than the one prescribed by your healthcare provider.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to Pamelor or your Pamelor dosage, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking Pamelor without first discussing it with your healthcare provider. Stopping the medicine abruptly may increase the risk for withdrawal symptoms.
